India is an agriculture dominant country. The production has to increase with the rapidly increasing population. The usage of Chemical fertilizers has increased manifold in the past 5-6 decades, this has deteriorated the health and condition of the soil, water and crops. The expenditure incurred in growing the crops also has increased and there is a misconception among the farmers that the crop yield will decrease if they do not use the fertilizers. The usage of pesticides is also on the rise and this has resulted into the poor quality of the food products prepared from the crops grown by using high dosage of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

There is an average loss of 20% in crops due to the outbreak of pests and diseases. Therefore, their prevention is essential to keep them safe. Now a days the chemicals and pesticides used to prevent the crops from pests and diseases are toxic and poisonous in nature, causing adverse effect on the health of the humans, animals, birds and soil. The latest report of the Standing Committee on Agriculture setup by Govt of India on “Impact of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on agriculture and allied sectors in the country” on August 11, 2016 observed that the consumption of chemical pesticides in the country increased from 55,540 tonnes in 2010-11 to 57,353 tonnes in 2014-15, while their imports increased from 53,996 tonnes to 77,376 tonnes in the same period. The Committee noted that excessive use of pesticides has a deteriorating effect on the health of both humans and animals. The Committee recommended that a policy should be put in place regarding the import and usage of pesticides. These pesticides and chemical fertilizers kill the microbes and bacteria that are helpful in production, reduces the fertility and makes the soil harder.
